I try to be mindful in my life and activities every day ‘try to be in the moment’, it doesn’t always work out, so I just start again the next day.  I try not to overthink too.  There are many organisations, groups and people that help me with my mindfulness – in particular, The Blurt Foundation,  Spark Support and Gabrielle Treanor.  I love following photo challenges, so I was thrilled to see Gabrielle has started a prompt for September 2018 – #BreatheSeptember2018 launch on Instagram.  This is the third year she has run this – you can check out previous hashtags too.  People get involved on twitter and facebook too.

My Previous photo challenges

I wrote about what you might want to include in a photo challenge in April 2018, when I asked if readers wanted to join in with this hashtag:

My advice for getting involved with photo challenges:

There’s no right or wrong way to do a photo challenge –  it’s up to you. Don’t feel you have to post every day, nor does it have to be public photos.  Just do whatever is best for you 🙂 Previously, I’ve joined these photo challenges:

December 2017 – On Instagram #blurtmerrrycalmness – The Blurt Foundation

January 2018 – On Instagram #savouringJanuary – @gabrielletreanor

Gabrielle writes about wellbeing, slowing down and self-care, being in the moment, mindfulness advice for overthinkers (like me). I really enjoyed this photo prompt too.

I was very surprised to see my photograph for the hashtag.

Most of my photos for these challenges are on this blog just look at the hashtags:

Or have a look on my Instagram feed: @becinmonton/

Have a look around the hashtags on Instagram as the photos and descriptions might help you ‘take a breath’ or ‘pause’. It’s also fun to see how people interpret the prompts 🙂

#BreatheSeptember2018 – from Gabrielle Treanor

This is the new photo challenge from Gabrielle for September – so of course I’m going to get involved.  The irony of following a photo challenge on Instagram when I can’t breathe, as I’ve got a horrible cold, is hilarious.  Typical of me.

Here are the prompts for September? Are you going to join in?

30 photo prompts for #BreatheSeptember2018

#BreatheSeptember2018 –

Did you notice the mistake? two ‘nourish’ Gabrielle noticed after she’d posted – two ‘nourish’ – she wrote about it here on Instagram.

I am going to consider how I nourish myself and how I nourish other people (for Day 3 and Day 5).

My #BreatheSeptember2018 so far:

Day 1: HERE

On Instagram – I wrote ‘I am happiest in the garden – it’s a place to relax, a place to eat, to chill out, listening to music, spending time with My Chap – it is our sanctuary.

I’ve written about my garden, and what it means to me, often:

'you can find me in the garden sign flower hanging basket

‘You can find me in the garden’ – this hanging basket is from summer 2014

This hanging basket was planted up in summer 2013 or 2014, I don’t remember now.  Certainly, I didn’t take the photo with the expectation that a cropped photo would be the header of my blog for over three years – so it just goes to show you don’t know where things will end up.

I think it might be a good idea to use a new header for the blog 😉 What do you think?

Day 2: RELAX

I find sewing very relaxing but I can only do small projects so I can see the end of finishing them.  I hand sew everything; I’m slow but I enjoy it.  I can use a sewing machine – my mum taught me in the 1980s but I’ve not touched one since.

It seems appropriate that as I start #BreatheSeptember2018 I start this I hope I’ll finish it before the end of September, as it really fits the theme and sums up why I ‘need’ to be in the hills, in the garden and outside – It’s why I try every day to #OneHourOutside

Breathe Banner sewing kit box among purple and yellow petumias

Breathe Sewing Kit – The Make Arcade*

The pack came as part of a Blurt Foundation Buddy Box – I’ve had these every month for a couple of years.

Check back at the end of September to see whether I finish the banner 🙂

Petunias – In a Vase on Monday – 3 September 2018

purple pink and lilac vein petunias glass vase

purple pink and lilac vein petunias glass vase

Even when I’m feeling ill I try to get outside into the garden, picking flowers for my Vase on a Monday or deadheading or watering.  I feel calm in the garden – even if the neighbours are making a racket, mowing lawns, dogs barking – it’s urban where we are.    Our garden nourishes me.   I’ve been feeling so rough with a cold I only nipped out for about 15 minutes today to pick flowers and take some photos.

In the vase are: Petunia ‘Purple Vein’, ‘Midnight’, ‘Hot Pink’ and the vase is a small square glass vase about 15cms.

As usual, I am joining Cathy at Rambling in the Garden who hosts this link up with garden bloggers from all around the world.  The idea is to pick some plants from your garden/locality and place them in a vase (or another receptacle).
The range of flowers and plants from around the world are staggering, as are people’s inventiveness about finding vases, jugs and pots to use.  I’ve been joining in with this meme since not long after I started my blog in early 2015.

Have a look around In a Vase in Monday – the photos and stories may nourish you too.

Are you going to Join me in #BreatheSeptember2018? Or another photo challenge?  What nourishes you?

What do you do to relax?  Let me know in the comments

Carpe Diem

love Bec xx xx xx

    • 09/09/2018 / 10:25 pm

These photo challenges really help me – yes inner calm 🙂 though I’m behind this week as I’ve been full of a cold….but just sorting out the next photo 😉 love bec

I love this! Definitely need to get involved! It’ll give me more of a reason to post on Instagram as I often neglect it, but it’s great to give me a reason ☺️

    • 04/09/2018 / 12:17 pm

I really like photo challenges like #breatheSeptember2018 as reflecting on the prompt words helps me be mindful/stop and pause. I use old photos too and go with the flow about whether I’m posting ‘on the day’
don’t forget to tag me when you get started so I can see what you post. Love Bec

Petunias don’t get the respect they deserve! I’m glad you gave them some by preparing a vase around them. The white variety with purple veining is interesting and not something I’ve seen before. I hope your cold in waning and that you’re on the mend.

    • 05/09/2018 / 1:35 pm

Thanks Kris – I have many petunias around the garden in tubs and they lift my mood. The lilac-veined ones are sold in our big DIY/garden centre B&Q as plugs but you have to be fast to get them. Yes I’m feeling a bit better today – thank you. Love Bec xx

Your Petunias are lovely! I’ve used them in vases recently, and they have a surprisingly long life. I think people just assume that they’ll fade fast, but they last several days for me. I hope you’ll be feeling much better soon. Thanks for visiting my blog. 🙂

    • 09/09/2018 / 10:28 pm

I think I might have petunias in my vase again this week 🙂 it was too wet here this weekend to investigate what’s flowering – I like looking around everyone’s blogs to see the vast varieties of flowers 🙂 love Bec x

  5. 07/09/2018 / 2:25 pm

I love the idea of following a photo challenge. I’m not very good at keeping my personal instagram account up to date and I take very few photos so this would be a great way to encourage more photos and more mindfulness in one! Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • 07/09/2018 / 3:18 pm

Photo challenges like these definitely help me think about the topic/be creative with photos – So go for it with #BreatheSeptember2018 – I’ve been wiped out with a cold so I’m catching up. Looking forward to seeing what you post too 🙂 love Bec x

  6. 07/09/2018 / 4:59 pm

Ah I’ve also got a cold! Back to school and germs hey 🤣 not joined in with a photo challenge for ages, will take a look

    • 09/09/2018 / 10:31 pm

Hope you’re on the mend soon Susan – even if you don’t get a chance to join in with the prompt it’s always good to read Gabrielle’s thoughts on life, wellbeing, and pressing pause when you need to. Love Bec 🙂

  7. 08/09/2018 / 6:51 am

What a good idea! September seems the perfect month for something like this as it is new beginnings for a lot of people!
I love your photos too you should definitely add them to your header 👏🏼

    • 09/09/2018 / 10:33 pm

yes I think it’s the whole September/back to school thing… I’m having a good think about what photos to use for my header 🙂 thanks Aimee

  8. 09/09/2018 / 9:21 pm

Oh the photos are lovely. I love this. I am trying to be kind to random people. Sometimes I think they think I’m a nutter but it makes me feel good and I like to think they go away and feel nice 🙂

  9. 09/09/2018 / 10:35 pm

thanks Emma – I’m soooo behind though as I’ve been ill this week. I think being kind is the best way to be –
and I very much doubt people think you’re a nutter… love Bec x
